The best 50th birthday messages do three things: they mention something specific you love about them, they treat the number with warmth rather than dread, and they look forward to what comes next. You don't need all three, and you don't need to be a poet. One real memory beats any clever line.
Below you'll find original messages for every kind of card, from heartfelt to cheeky, plus a section for the trickiest one of all: the card from a whole group.
A simple formula for writing your own
If you'd rather write something personal (and it's always the one they keep), try this:
- A memory. One moment only you two share. "I still think about that camping trip where it rained for five days straight."
- What you admire. Something they've done or the way they are. "You're the only person I know who'd turn that into the best holiday we ever had."
- The next fifty. A wish or a plan. "Here's to fifty more years of making the best of things, preferably somewhere drier."
Put together, that's three sentences, and it'll mean more than anything printed inside the card.
Heartfelt 50th birthday messages
Fifty years of you is something worth celebrating. Thank you for being exactly who you are.
Half a century of kindness, laughter and terrible dancing. The world's better for every year of it.
I hope today you feel as loved as you make everyone around you feel.
Fifty looks wonderful on you, mostly because you've filled every year so well.
Here's to the memories behind you and the adventures still ahead. Happy 50th.
You've spent fifty years looking after everyone else. Today, let us look after you.
Some people just make life better by being in it. You're one of them. Happy 50th birthday.
The first fifty were brilliant. I can't wait to see what you do with the next.
Funny ones (that won't land badly)
A quick test before you go for a joke about age: would they make the same joke about themselves? If they would, you're safe. If they've gone a bit quiet about this birthday, save the humour for anything but the number.
Fifty? I'd have guessed forty-nine and a half at most.
Happy 50th! You're now officially old enough to know better and still not care.
Don't think of it as fifty. Think of it as twenty with thirty years of experience.
Congratulations on reaching the age where a good night's sleep counts as a big night out.
Fifty years old and you still haven't learned to load the dishwasher properly. Never change.
They say life begins at forty. Glad to see you've had ten years of practice.
Happy 50th. I've got you a card, a cake, and absolutely no comments about your knees.
Half a century! You're basically a vintage. Rare, valuable and best enjoyed with friends.
Short and sweet (for when the card's nearly full)
Happy 50th. Here's to you.
Fifty, and still the best of us.
Half a century of brilliant. Happy birthday.
Wishing you the happiest 50th.
Cheers to fifty years of you.
The best is yet to come. Happy 50th.
Fifty years, zero regrets about knowing you.
Big birthday, big love.
50th birthday messages for Mum
Happy 50th, Mum. Everything good in me, I learned from watching you.
Fifty years young and still the person I call first. Love you, Mum.
Mum, you've made every one of my birthdays special. I hope this one is yours.
Happy 50th to the woman who taught me that kindness is never wasted.
I hope this year gives back even a fraction of what you've given us. Happy birthday, Mum.
Fifty suits you, Mum. So does a day off. Enjoy every minute.
50th birthday messages for Dad
Happy 50th, Dad. Thanks for every lift, every lesson and every bad joke.
Fifty years old and still the one we all ring when something breaks. Happy birthday, Dad.
Dad, you've shown me what a good life looks like. Here's to the next chapter of yours.
Happy 50th to my favourite person to argue about the football with.
Half a century, Dad. You don't look a day over your usual.
Everything I know about doing the right thing, I learned from you. Happy 50th.
For your husband, wife or partner
Happy 50th, my love. Every year with you is my favourite one so far.
Fifty years of you, and I've been lucky enough to share the best of them.
I'd choose you all over again. Happy 50th birthday.
Here's to growing older together, and never quite growing up.
You make ordinary days feel like something worth celebrating. Today, it's your turn.
Happy 50th to my favourite travel companion, best friend and partner in everything.
For a friend
Happy 50th to the friend who's seen me at my worst and stuck around anyway.
Fifty years of you, and I've been around for the best bits. Lucky me.
To many more years of long lunches, bad decisions and good laughs. Happy 50th.
Friends like you don't come along often. Happy birthday, and here's to the next fifty.
You're not getting older, you're getting more interesting. Happy 50th.
If I'd known fifty would look this good, I'd have worried less about it. Happy birthday.
Messages from all of us
Group cards are where good intentions go to die. Twelve people sign, eight of them write "Happy birthday!" and nothing else, and the cousin in Canada never sees it at all. If the card is from a group, a shared message at the top sets the tone, then everyone adds something personal underneath.
From the family
From all of us: happy 50th to the person who holds this family together. We love you more than this card has room for.
Fifty years of you, and every one of us is better for it. Happy birthday from your whole, slightly chaotic family.
We've all got a favourite memory of you, and today we're sharing them. Happy 50th, with love from all of us.
To the heart of every family gathering: happy 50th. Here's to many more Sunday lunches together.
Happy 50th from the people who love you most (and who'll never let you forget this birthday).
However far apart we are, we're all raising a glass to you today. Happy 50th, from all of us.
From friends
From all of us: fifty years old and still the one who makes every plan happen. Happy birthday to our favourite organiser.
We've been friends through the good times, the bad haircuts and everything in between. Happy 50th from the whole gang.
Happy 50th to the friend who brought us all together. Tonight, the drinks are on us.
Fifty years of you, and we've had a front-row seat for a lot of them. Happy birthday from all of us.
To the one who remembers everyone's birthday: this time, we remembered yours. Happy 50th.
Here's to fifty years of friendship, laughter and the stories we'll never tell your children.
From colleagues
Happy 50th from all of us. Thanks for making Mondays bearable and Fridays brilliant.
Wishing you a wonderful 50th birthday from the whole team. Enjoy every minute of your celebrations.
Happy 50th to the person who always knows where everything is. We'd be lost without you.
From all of us at work: have a brilliant birthday, and don't even think about checking your emails.
Fifty years of experience, and we're lucky to benefit from some of it every day. Happy birthday.
Happy 50th! The office cake is in your honour, so you get first slice.
Signing off
With all my love, today and always
Here's to the next fifty
Raising a glass to you
With love and a very large slice of cake
Love you lots, happy 50th
Cheers to you, today and every day
When everyone's message is gathered in one place
A card goes round once, gets lost in someone's handbag, and arrives with half the family missing. That's where a Lizt helps. Everyone adds their message from their phone, wherever they live, and the recipient gets every one of them together alongside the gift.
Writing for a Lizt is a little different from squeezing into the corner of a card. Each person has space of their own, so it's the moment for the formula above: one specific memory, what you admire, and a wish for the next fifty. A dozen short, specific messages make a far better keepsake than a dozen people writing "Happy birthday!".
Frequently asked questions
Is it OK to joke about someone turning 50?
It depends on the person. If they joke about their own age, a gentle tease is usually welcome. If they've been quiet about the birthday, keep the humour away from the number and focus on what you love about them.
How long should a 50th birthday message be?
Anything from one line to a short paragraph. In a shared card, two or three sentences is plenty. If you're writing your own, aim for one specific memory and one warm wish.
What do you write in a 50th birthday card from a group?
Start with one shared message from everyone, such as "From all of us: happy 50th to the person who holds this family together", then let each person add something personal underneath. A shared Lizt works the same way for groups who can't all sign one card.
Is a 50th birthday a golden birthday?
Not usually. A golden birthday is when someone turns the same age as the date they were born, such as 15 on the 15th. Gold is linked with 50 through golden wedding anniversaries, which is why gold often features in 50th birthday cards and decorations.
Over to you
The message they'll remember isn't the cleverest one. It's the one that could only have come from you. And if you're gathering words from a whole group, you don't need to chase anyone round with a card.
